Move It

Moving is traumatic. So why have I been traveling for 12 solid years? Granted, I stopped here and there for six to 12 months, but no place has felt like Home.

It may surprise you to learn that I am a nester, given my proclivity for buying mobile abodes: first a tiny house on wheels, towed across the continent and back again; then a sailboat humming along the coast of México for two years.

Moving is a familiar habit, though I am no longer three or four, uprooted by my father’s job; or 13, evicted from the family rental I dubbed Rainbow Flower; or 18, tossed out by my mother for both our benefits.

I am not powerless, but when I hear a metallic clang near Habibi and am told they are moving my tall ladder in 30 minutes, the old feelings arise. “If you need to move my boat,” I ask, because they have been shuffling vessels for days as sailors return to plonk their yachts into the water, “will you tell me?” I don’t like the querulous tone in my voice. I feel very small, even as I tower ten feet over the boatyard owner from my dry-docked deck.

“Yep,” he says, but I don’t believe him. I have been shifted suddenly so many times, once with only six days’ notice. Not to mention living in a car and moving every single day for several months on end. It’s hard to relax in unpredictable environments, and difficult to work, though I have managed it through pure determination and extremely fine organizational skills.

The only kind of moving I really like is dancing, be it on land or in water. Every morning I sway with the fish; and last night I locked the empty cruisers’ loft, donned bluetooth headphones, and pressed play on Marvin Gaye. Because I heard it through the grapevine: the only constant is change. And I am learning to live with that.

Hi Elizabeth. My name is Darren Marquardt and I find your essays lovely and contemplating…and entertaining as well. I also wanted to say that I enjoyed your performance in Howling V: The Rebirth and I’m a fan of the film, especially considering the european castle setting in Budapest. Huge werewolf fan in general, but may I ask what your favorite scenes were to film and did you know that your character Mary Lou was the werewolf before reading the script? Oh and was it uncomfortable doing the nude scene in the sauna? I would be so fascinated to hear your musings on the film.

Thanks so much, Darren. Yep, knew I’d be the killer from the beginning, one of the reasons I accepted the role. I loved the castle too. My favorite scene in it was with Philip Davis, who played the count. Took forever to get a good take because I kept laughing when he leaned over to threaten me. He became a good friend on-set. Yeah, EXTREMELY uncomfortable filming the nude scene. They found a bunch of guys on the roof ogling right before.

Oh and did you actually wear any werewolf prosthetics/make up? I know there wasn’t any transformation scene obviously but just curious.

Nope, SFX dude Mike was my alter-ego on the film. Dressed my dog as a werewolf one Hallowe’en, though, and added bloody make-up to my neck.

Wow this is so cool thanks for answering back…can’t believe I’m talking with you lol. I wonder is it true some of the castle rooms were actual sets built or was it entirely all authentic? That werewolf suit must have been creepy to interact with. How were the other actors you worked with? I think you all did decent/ fine work with your performances in my view. I also should say I thought you were beautiful and clever with the twist…and even the subtle hints throughout the film are nice to rewatch. Particularly when Mary Lou says “I’m hungry” before the professor is murdered.

You caught that! Excellent. Mostly authentic castle shots. Cold down there, because the tunnels were under the Danube River so aristocracy could escape in the bad old days. Yes, good cast. Victoria Catlin was my next-door neighbor at the hotel, and shared her dried pears (to which I became addicted). Stephanie Faulkner and I became friends over Hungarian couture, and Ben Cole is a total sweetie.

I know you had a cameo in the 6th film, but may I ask why didn’t you continue acting? You have nice skills in the film. I apologize if that is a personal question.

Oh that is interesting cool. Yeah I liked that you fooled everyone as the “most innocent” character and your line in the hotel to Jonathan “It’s not easy pretending to be stupid” was clever ha. I actually found it interesting that Mary Lou must have had teleportating ability because she obviously wasn’t really asleep when other characters were killed underground in the tunnels and it seemed she could transform quickly.

Your devilish smile at the end was wicked.
